One Step Forward, Two steps back! Goal setting

What happens when you don’t fully meet your goal? Sometimes, you have times when you seem to take one step forward to take two steps backward. I have had this happen to me. I have recently gained some weight. People at work have said, “Are you pregnant?”

To which I reply, “No, I’m just fat.” It is frustrating as most people who tell me I am fat are fatter than I. It is almost like a gloating thing for them. They were all asking how I was doing it when I was losing weight and now are almost laughing at me for going backwards in my goal.

 

It is not shameful to go backwards in a goal. It is only shameful to give up on ones goal. Instead of giving in, I have to evaluate my goal and see what went wrong.

Since getting married, I have become more homebound. Before, as I only have my learners I would walk everywhere. I found myself walking all the time as I hated busses. I ate less as when you cook for one, it is easy to control what you eat. Now, my husband has a car and it is more convenient. I eat out more because we’re always rushing off somewhere or laziness sets in as my hours at work have changed.

When people ask why I have gained weight, I tell them because I am eating too many burgers and need to exercise more. It is honest…I am not doing what I once did. I used to make excuses like they make clothes smaller than they did before. I know better.

Goals are important to make! Goals are not to be looked at as a way to fail but a way to continuously succeed. If you want something, you set a goal, or set your sights on it. When a goal is made, you must review it constantly.

 

I am going to use my weight loss goal to help you guys to see what your goals should look like. When setting goals, ask yourself:

You don’t want to set low goals, you want goals that challenge you. However, if you set your goal too high, you will not achieve it. Set a goal that makes you stretch.  DO NOT make a goal to lose 20 pounds in two days. How long did it take you to gain the weight? A LONG time. How long will it take? Bit by bit. 3)      What resources can help me with my goal? Are their books on the subject? Yes, I can go on the internet to look up food ideas to keep me thin. Have others accomplished the same goal? Yes, there are success stories everywhere. Look for books, look for people who have similar goals and work together.

4)      Do I have a date for my goal? Yes, I have a goal to be at least 10 pounds lighter by August.  If you don’t set a date to accomplish your goal, your goal is not important to you. It disappears.

5)      Do I have someone to answer to? Yes, I am going to make it my goal to answer to my husband. I am trying to go to exercise classes twice a week. I am also going to attempt to exercise two more times on my own.

6)      Do you revisit and revise your goal? Yes, every time I miss out on steps of my goal I have to see why. Why did I gain weight?

These steps can help people with and without ADHD. ADDers, get help to draw up your goals. You may have amazing ideas in your head but it takes someone else to brainstorm with you sometimes to bring your ideas from scrambled to amazing.
